Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2736: Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis Engaged - Body Language

Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher are reportedly engaged. In this image they are shown at a recent LA Lakers game. Both stars of "That 70's Show" are smiling sincerely in this moment (Kunis a bit more so). Their heads and necks are also leaning in the direction of each other. This "leaning towards" is seen during moments of true affection. The act of tilting the head/neck/torso towards another person during laughter or smiling is also a phenomenon which amplifies the bonding. Laughter when another is present has a huge component of rapport-building and it's less about something being funny. The leaning in - and sometimes touching of the other person catalyzes and accelerates the bonding of the moment. Care must be taken to have some significant rapport already established before this nonverbal is displayed however - lest it backfire.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2735: Mother confronts Driver about Brain-Damaged Son, Is His Apology Sincere? (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Stewart Richardson repeated apologized to Loubna Khader, the mother of Abdallah, the two-year old boy who he dramatically injured five years ago - and left in a permanent vegetative state. And although his words said, "I'm sorry" - his body language certainly did not.

Less than two percent of people consistently speak out of one side of their mouth. This nonverbal is thus relatively unusual for consistent baseline behavior. Intriguingly for the vast majority of time, when people adopt this asymmetrical speaking configuration - it is highly consistent with insincerity. This body language is particularly true during an apology.

Asymmetrical speaking can also represent a form of "mouth swagger".

Richardson's very straight and horizontal lip thinning in this image right after he says, "I'm sorry" is highly consistent with anger, not sorrow, remorse or sincerity.

It's also very important to note that Stewart Richardson's forehead is smooth and not contracted. If his apology were sincere his central forehead would be contracted (CFC) - indicting a heightened empathy state.
We never see him display a CFC. Therefore Richardson's apology is not sincere.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2734: Marcus Smart Assaults Texas Tech Fan - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During a recent basketball game against Texas Tech, Marcus Smart (Oklahoma State Cowboys Guard) pushed a fan.

Less than a second into the above video, the male fan can be seen displaying a classic expression of disgust directed at Mr. Smart.

Of particular note here is the tightening of his mid-face and the flaring of his nostrils

Approximately 1 second later, after Marcus Smart commits assault on a fan, the adjacent woman gives a great example of a surprise expression.

During significant episodes of sincere surprise, the forehead is strongly contracted and elevated along its entire width, the eyelids are very widely opened - and the mouth is opened extremely widely in an oval - the long axis of which is vertically oriented. A very important component to this expression is that the upper or lower teeth are rarely exposed - as they are covered by tightly-stretched lips.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2733: A Neuroscientist who's a Psychopath - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Neuroscientist James Fallon recently had his book published, "The Psychopath Inside: A Neuroscientist's Personal Journey into the Dark Side of the Brain ". Incredibly within it, among other things, he lets the World know he is a diagnosed Psychopath. Sociopaths and Psychopaths both manifest a particular body language/facial expression with significantly greater frequency than everyone else.

Every human being OCCASIONALLY has his/her central forehead contracted at the same time he/she mouth-smiles. The vast majority of us do this just once in a while. This indicates incredulity, smugness or arrogance and can also be seen during contempt - and every healthy person feels these emotions from time to time. However when this combination occurs often (in a relatively small minority of the population) it is highly consistent with sociopathic or psychopathic pathology.

The vast majority of the time when the central forehead is contracted (CFC) the mouth is configured in an expression of pain, sorrow, anger or fear. It is primarily contracted during moments of emotional or physical pain - either for oneself or experienced secondarily via empathy. Thus this misdirected prevalence of the CFC out of context with a mouth smile seen in sociopaths and psychopaths is an outward manifestation of their inability to feel emotional empathy.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2729: Viktor Yanukovych thrown out & Yulia Tymoshenko released - Body Language in Ukraine (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

What a historic twenty-four hours it has been! Viktor Yanukovych was voted out of office (now in hiding) and Yulia Tymoshenko was released from prison. The above two photos were taken as Ms. Tymoshenko was giving a addressing the People of Ukraine in Kiev just after her new freedom.

Unlike Yanukovych and most politicians, Tymoshenko (a former Ukrainian Prime Minister) displays expressions of high sincerity throughout her speech.

Note that her central forehead is contracted (CFC). This is seen as normal expression of physical or emotional pain felt directly for oneself - or experienced for other's via empathy. When these emotions occur in an otherwise healthy and sincere individual - the mouth adopts a congruent expressions of pain, fear, anger or sorrow. However, whenever a CFC is seen even with a little smile (which is NOT the case with Ms. Tymposhenko) - it signifies arrogance, incredulity ... or if seen chronically - sociopathic disease.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2728: Mikaela Shiffrin wins Gold at Sochi - Sincere Surprise Body Language (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Mikaela Shiffrin won a Gold Medal in Sochi today. She is the reigning World Cup and World Champion in Slalom - and has become the youngest person ever to win Gold at an Olympic slalom event. Shiffrin is shown in the above image (L) earlier today next to Silver Medalist Marlies Schild (Austria).

The surprise on Shiffrin's face is sincere. Note how widely her eyes are opened here. Her mid-face is also stretched as her mouth and eyes are opening very wide. When people feign surprise they will open their mouth somewhat widely - however this is nearly always with a greater horizontal component. However, notice how Mikaela's mouth is open more widely VERTICALLY. Moreover her teeth are not visible. Although there are exceptions (when other emotions are co-existing) neither upper nor lower teeth are almost never visible during SINCERE surprise - thus if teeth are visualized - the surprise is almost always fake.

Congratulations Mikaela!

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2727: "I am a Ukrainian" Video - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The video above recently went viral. In it a 25 year-old anonymous Ukrainian woman makes an impassioned plea to citizens of the World's other 195 countries for help via solidarity and indirect political pressure. And although there have been some short-live truces, many reports out of Kiev say that the protesters will not give up until President Viktor Yanukovych steps down. The demonstrations began about three months ago when Yanukovych reversed a decision to sign a trade agreement with the EU and thus siding with Russia.

From a body language perspective, this is an interesting video to observe. In any real World situation, there is rarely one isolated emotion for very long. Often there are two or even three emotions experienced simultaneously or in a very short time period. View this video first with the sound off, then with sound on. See how many emotions you can pick out in isolation and also mixed.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2725: Ted Nugent: Calls Barack Obama, "a Subhuman Mongrel" - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last month Ted Nugent infamously called President Barack Obama a "subhuman mongrel". The video above includes Nugent using this slur. What follows is a partial body language analysis.

At the 0:56 mark, Nugent displays several nonverbal signals consistent with anger. When two or more body language configurations are seen simultaneously or nearly so, this is termed a "Cluster".

Here, the rocker juts his jaw forward while clenching it at the same time. There is also a dramatic thinning of his lips along with a tightening of the "mustache area".

At the 0:57 mark, we see demonstrated an extremely prototypical thinning of the lips. Even when seen alone, this extreme straight horizontal lip sign is a very reliable red flag for anger.

Nugent knows he's pushing it. Thus we see several times in this short clip (here a few tenths of a second after the photo immediately above), an example of a "Tongue Jut" (aka "Lizard Tongue") - here indicating "I've been bad", "I got caught", "I did a foolish thing" or "I got away with something".

Depending on the other nonverbals with which it is clustered it can signal excitement or self-depreciating emotions.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2724: Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan Twenty Years Later (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Twenty years after the assault which nearly took Nancy Kerrigan out of the 1994 Lillehammer (Norway) Olympics and probably/possibly contributed to her not getting a Gold Medal in Women's Figure skating, Tonya Harding and Kerrigan have given an interview with NBC's Mary Carillo. What follows is a partial body language analysis.

Note: The original video has, since the original post, been removed from its online source. The images below however, were captured from this video.

At 0:45, just after Harding Says, "Which day is that?", She shows a clear fear expression in her eyes.

At 0:51, in an expression which some will falsely label as contempt, this expression is consistent with a form of Bravado and is termed "Mouth Swagger". In this context it indicates it insincerity.

Index finger pointing sweep by Harding is similar to a finger-point hand chop and is consistent with deception.

This moment shows Harding displaying a "Mouth of Fear" as well as some eye expression of fear (as she exaggeratingly says "... sleeping ..." (0:59).

More finger-pointing consistent with deception signals as well as continued eyes of fear.

Immediately after Harding's explanation of where she was and what she was doing when she found out about the assault on Kerrigan, she displays arrogance and contempt.

Twenty years later, Nancy Kerrigan is still angry. Her "Jaw Jut" at 1:49, is a strong nonverbal indicator that she is still re-living this anger.

Back in 1994, Harding was interviewed in the days just after the assault. In this image, she displays a partial smile (Duping Delight).

This body language is highly out of context for the emotions she should be feeling if innocent and/or if she had no pre-knowledge of the assault. It can also indicate narcissism and a thus a very low empathy quotient.

A moment later, Harding displays a full and sincere smile. In the emotional scenarios of empathy, sympathy, a desire to protect herself or the seeking justice - a smile is highly out of context.

Harding is even blushing in this moment.

This nonverbal cluster is highly consistent with a very low empathy quotient, deception or narcissism.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2723: Bode Miller's Interview after His Super G Bronze at Sochi - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Bode Miller won a bronze medal in the Men's Super-G yesterday. He is the oldest medalist in Olympic history and the most decorated in American alpine skier ever.

Bode Miller lost his brother Chelone last year to complications from a seizure and in the interview above, he tears up and cuts his interview short. NBC's Christin Cooper has received flack for pushing Miller too hard here, and yet Miller has come back in her defense.

From a body language perspective, this interview provides a good example of one setting of what is termed, the "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR). The inward lip roll is seen when the psyche is trying to prevent the crescendo of emotions from straying far from baseline - first outwardly and thus secondarily on the inside as well.

Most of the time, an ILR is seen in the context of negative emotion (sadness, anger, disgust, etc.) - although sometimes the inward lip roll is seen to suppress joy/laughter when for some reason the person does not want it to be displayed.

Multiple times throughout this interview, Bode Miller displays an ILR, to no avail, in order to try and suppress sadness progressing to tears.

My condolences and congratulations to Bode Miller.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2722: Charles Hamelin & Marianne St-Gelias's Kiss after his Gold Medal - A Paramount Body Language Signal of Affection (PHOTO, VIDEO)

Canadian Short Track Speed Skater Charles Hamelin is seen here kissing his girlfriend and fellow skater, Marianne St-Gelais at the Sochi Winter Olympics. Hamelin has just won a Gold Medal in the 1500 Meter. While their bodies are certainly not in the optimum position for kissing or most displays of affection, one nonverbal in particular is very telling.

Forty percent of the mass of the brain is dedicated to the visual system and ninety percent of all sensory input is dedicated to sight. Hearing, touch, taste and smell - collectively account for only ten percent of incoming sensory data. When the eyes are shut, a slight redistribution of blood flow and electro-chemical activity of the brain is redirected to these other four (non-visual) senses - as well as cognitive and EMOTIONAL centers of the brain. We close our eyes during kissing, hugging and other affectionate displays because we want to drink in every last drop of emotion. As feeling creatures this is a natural and normal process when the emotion is SINCERE (most mammals do so as well). When there is a lack of sincerity - the eyes remain open - for there is no desire to amplify the sensory or emotional experience (ergo a relative state of apathy). The opposite is happening here however. In this moment Hamelin and St-Gelais are human beings in love first .... and Olympians second.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2721: Vladimir Putin at U.S. Hockey Victory over Russia at Sochi Olympics - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTO)

In the preliminary round of Men's Olympic Hockey in Sochi, the U.S. team defeated the Russians 3-2 in overtime. T.J. Oshie had a legendary performance for a total of four goals in overtime and scored the winning goal in the eighth round of an overtime shootout.

Even the Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the game. In the image above he can be seen waving - yet on his face he has a mild disgust expression. The hand gesture is a conscious one - however his facial nonverbal is a subconscious display. Whenever there is a conscious-subconscious body language disparity, it is one initiated subconsciously which reflects the true emotional tone.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2720: Ireen Wüst - A Gold Medal, Emotional Processing and Empathy (PHOTO)

Rapid mouth covering is a body language consistent with a high empathy quotient. It is seen during moments of high surprise and disbelief - either with something very wonderful or very awful. Those who rarely do exhibit this and other gestures have relatively low empathy.

This phenomenon results from an emotional overload and is a nonverbal signal that the brain is rapidly processing new data. The emotional brain is essentially playing catch-up to what the logical brain already knows.

This image shows Ireen Wüst (Netherlands) during her gold medal award ceremony for the 3000 meter speed skating event. She became the first openly gay athlete to medal at the Sochi Olympic Games.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2719: Julia Mancuso at Sochi Olympics - Body Language of a Heightened Adrenaline State (PHOTO, VIDEO)

Julia Mancuso is shown here in the slalom portion of the super combined alpine skiing event of the 2014 Sochi Olympics. The American Skier went on to win a bronze medal in the event.

From a body language perspective, note how her jaw is protruding forward. This is termed a "Jaw Jut" and is a very common manifestation of a elevated adrenaline state. This nonverbal is of course no surprise here - within the context of World-class athletic competition. Yet in the everyday world a jaw jut very commonly accompanies another emotional state - that of extreme anger. In fact when this body language is seen - there is a high likelihood that the hands will be configured in fists as well as a dramatically increased chance that the anger will quickly escalate to violence. This tendency is particularly true in men.

Thus when you see a jaw jut it is a warning of a possible/probable pending attack. Take heed of this valuable threat assessment sign and move away. Seconds count.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2718: Obama: "I can do whatever I want" Body Language with French President François Hollande (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

French President François Hollande is visiting the United States. President Obama, who normally has very good body language, committed a major faux pas as the two leaders walked outside Monticello today. Keeping his hands clasped behind his back nearly the entire time he walked outside of Jefferson's Home, the President said, "... Sorry we're breaking protocol here. That's alright. That's the good thing about being President, I can, I can do whatever I want." (0:01 - 0:08)

POTUS used the hyper-alpha display of long-duration hands clasped behind-the-back nonverbal - despite the fact he's the most powerful man on the planet. When you're at the top of any pecking order, one should want to build rapport, not destroy it. Barack does not need to remind anyone he's President. As with all high-alpha body language, if over-used it will backfire and send patronizing and arrogant signals. This nonverbal configuration is powerful and thus it should be used very sparingly - essentially choreographed for particular and brief moments. Moreover, walking in this manner, particularly with another head-of-state, has the effect of amplifying its condescending message.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2717: LA Reporter Confuses Samuel L. Jackson with Laurence Fishburne - A Common Body Language Misconception (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

KTLA reporter Sam Rubin recently confused Samuel L. Jackson with Laurence Fishburne. Jackson didn't let him off the hook easily. His response was hilarious (above) and was full of great nonverbal tells - and there is one which many get wrong.

One common body language misconception, is that when a person states something they believe to be true, if they are shake their head back and forth (as commonly seen in the expression of "no") - as Samuel L. Jackson does in this video (e.g. from 0:14 to 0:18 as he says, "See what, see - you're, you're as crazy as the people on Twitter!) - that they are lying and their real thoughts and feelings are the opposite. This is NOT so with Mr. Jackson - and in fact, much of the time this correlation is not true. Do you know how to tell when it applies and when it's false? This is a variation of what nonverbal signal?

Did you catch Jackson's expression of contempt?
